What To Do When The Coffee Fails

Coffee turns me from a zombie into a semi-pleasant human being...on most days. Days like today are rare, but they exist. Nothing was waking me up! I got 7 hours of sleep, work was stress free, the weather was 70 and sunny, I ate (fairly) healthy. There was no reason why I should be as tired as I was today! I tried drinking coffee, tea and water, but nothing seemed to work! It's frustrating how much this doesn't make sense.

So, the question is: What do you do when you just want to sleep? I've come up with a list of things that MIGHT work. I have to be honest, I didn't try any of these things today. Instead I napped for 3 hours, woke up and started blogging. Not the most productive day but also not the most unproductive.

 1. Meditate. It seems weird that I'm telling you to sit with your eyes closed and concentrate on your breathing. You might need to fight the urge to nap a little harder than usual, but when meditation is done right you'll feel awake and ready to conquer the rest of the day. Although, if this is your first time meditating it might have the opposite affect and put you right to sleep.

 2. Exercise. I hate how much I hate exercising. Exercise can cure a lot of my problems, yet I rarely ever do it. Even a short 10 minute workout will release endorphins and give you the positivity boost that you need to continue the day. This option sounds exhausting (at least to me it does) but exercise has been proven to wake you up AND give you a better nights sleep.

 3. Power nap. Today I napped for 3 hours...that's never a good idea! You'll just wake up confused and still exhausted. I've heard a lot of different numbers thrown around about how long a nap should be for. The number I'm telling y'all is 45 minutes! A nap no longer than 45 minutes can freshen you up and have you back on your feet for the rest of the day.

4. Drink water! All my life I've been told that drinking lots of water is essentially magic. It'll make your body feel great, in turn giving you energy to last through the entire day. I was hesitant to put this on the list because some people tell me it doesn't work, it's all in my head. Speaking from personal experience I find drinking butt-loads of water to work very well. Like I said before, I tried drinking coffee, tea, and water today to wake myself up. Where I went wrong is that I waited too long to start drinking water. Water should be your first drink of the day. It should also be had alongside of your caffeinated drinks. Today, I used it as a last resort and it did nothing except make me have to pee.

Sometimes there's days when all you want to do is Netflix & nap. Those days really test your self-discipline. Can you fight through the napping urge and do some of these healthy practices? Today I couldn't, and that's okay! I'll get em next time.
